Progressive International Multi Opener

This opener does everything you want it to do. It’s small to fit in any drawer and easy to use for any age. It has a great design that feels comfortable in your hand especially for an older person or someone with arthritis.
This thing works great but its easy to break it at the top pivot point and there is no repair possible because it needs to pivot at that point. Glueing is out of the question. I am going to buy another one because it works so good and be really careful with it.
I’m reviewing this product because I’ve had my eye on it to re-purchase since my first one broke in half at the pivot/rotation point at the top – and I just noticed they’ve raised the price from $8.99 to $11.39. So, at that price, no, I (probably) won’t buy it again. It had worked very well on opening jars – if I remember correctly, it has a bit of rubber around the area that grabs the jar lid, so it hold on well and I could always open any jar (large and small). Crate and Barrel had these for $8.99 a few days ago. Not sure if I should give 2 or 3 stars. I’m giving 2. Message to manufacturers: Make quality products. When did everything have to be replaced every few years??
I just love this type of Progressive International Multi Opener. I use it for my soda bottles all the time and larger jars some of the time. I also open cat and dog food cans by using the small contoured thingie at the smaller end. I find it the easiest of all to use. I had one of these for the last several years and used it daily. However, a tiny piece of plastic portion at the smallest opener part broke off with all the use and I found myself lost without it – until I found it on Amazon! I’m back in business and very pleased with the opener. I highly recommend this opener. It is the perfect tool for anyone with hand joint problems, or even those who would like to keep thier long fingernails! Thank you Amazon!
Edit 08 Dec 09:
Still give 4 stars, although I have noticed that (as originally suspected) the large jar opener side doesn’t work ideally. I have small, very wide jar of honey which this opener has not helped with at all. I think if the “handle” (small side of the opener) was a bit longer, it would be okay, but because the jar is so wide, the handle is too small to provide any assistance. It still works wonderfully for opening jars up to aprox 2 inches diameter. It doesn’t seem to matter if the top is metal or plastic, or if the jar/bottle is glass or plastic–as long as it isn’t too wide or too small (for example, my jar of honey, probably large jars of pickles, or bottles of vanilla extract) this will open them easily.
Original Review 15 June 2009:
I admit, I didn’t have high hopes for this. But I figured it would be worth trying because I’ve tried so many other jar openers that haven’t done the job. Best “might as well” I’ve gotten in a long time!
It’s a very sturdy bottle opener; I don’t feel like I’m going to break it when I’m trying to pry off a very tight bottlecap. The gripper holds tight to plastic covers with a very little edge (like containers of Parmesan or other cheese.) The best part is the part I had the lowest expectations for, the large jar opener. It unscrews the lids from jars of Classico pasta sauce with hardly any effort at all! Just a little squeeze and twist and pop, it’s open. As a reference, those jar lids give me more trouble than any others; before this opener I would run one under hot water, use multiple types of grips (plastic gloves, the flat grippers, silicone pot holders to name a few), have to take several breaks to shake out the cramps in my hands, curse a bit (shh, I only curse when no one else is around to hear me!), and finally get it to budge after a great deal of frustration and pain. I’d usually start trying to open the jar at the same time I’d put the water on to boil, since it would usually take as long to open as it would take the water to heat.
As I said, I’ve tried a lot of other jar openers and the only one that’s come close in terms of ease of use and effort expended is the one we had growing up, which had been my grandmother’s. I’d been searching for one like that (it was metal and finally rusted and broke a few years ago) with no luck. I haven’t even seen anything similar. I finally figured something would be better than nothing until I could find one like that, and since this one was multipurpose, it seemed like it would be the least waste of money if it didn’t work for the jars. But I’m done searching, since this is actually better than my grandmother’s was!
